Building envelope literature, mapped

Gateway 2 approval and Gateway 3 completion both stand or fall on evidence, and for the external wall that evidence starts in manufacturer literature: datasheets, classification reports, installation guides and warranty manuals. This page maps where to find it: the leading manufacturers for external and internal components, and the testing, certification and warranty bodies that sit behind them. We link to the source; we never republish it.

Why the paperwork is the product

The Building Safety Regulator has been clear about why applications stall: test data that does not match the actual build-up at Gateway 2, and as-built records that do not match what was installed at Gateway 3. Both failures start in the same place, treating manufacturer literature as marketing rather than evidence. A classification report is written for a specific configuration: thickness, density, facing, fixings, cavity, substrate. Change any of them and the report may no longer apply to your wall.

The practical discipline is simple to describe: collect the documents at procurement, check the tested configuration against your detail before anything is ordered, and record what was actually installed against those documents as you build. That set, versioned and attributable, is a large part of the golden thread you hand over at Gateway 3.

On materials: since the 2018 amendment to the Building Regulations, materials that become part of an external wall of a relevant building over 18m must generally achieve European class A2-s1,d0 or A1, with limited exemptions. On process: the four reasons Gateway 3 applications stall are all, at root, evidence failures. The manufacturers below publish the documents that stop them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does manufacturer literature matter at Gateway 2 and Gateway 3?
Because the BSR expects the tested system, the specified system and the installed system to match. Datasheets, classification reports and installation guides are the evidence chain. A leading cause of rejection is test data that does not match the actual build-up, and at Gateway 3 the as-built golden thread must contain the documentation for what was really installed.
What fire classification do external wall materials need on higher-risk buildings?
Since the 2018 amendment to Building Regulations, materials that become part of an external wall of a relevant building over 18m must generally achieve European class A2-s1,d0 or A1, with limited exemptions. Always confirm the classification report covers the product as installed, not a different thickness, facing or fixing arrangement.
What should I collect from manufacturers for the golden thread?
The datasheet, the declaration of performance, the EN 13501 classification report or assessment applicable to your build-up, installation instructions, and any project-specific technical statements. Collect them at procurement, version them, and record what was actually installed against them.
Who are the main testing and certification bodies for the building envelope in the UK?
Fire testing and certification is carried out by laboratories such as BRE and Warringtonfire, with product certification from bodies like the BBA. UKAS accreditation confirms a laboratory is competent for the specific standard. CWCT standards govern curtain walling and cladding testing, and warranty providers such as NHBC, LABC Warranty and Premier Guarantee publish through-wall technical requirements.
